Ikigai ~ What makes you leap out of bed in the morning?
According to the Japanese, everyone has an ikigai. To find it often requires deep inquiry and lengthy ‘search of self’ – a search which is highly regarded.
It roughly means the “thing that you live for” or “the reason for which you get up in the morning.” In a nutshell, it encompasses the idea that happiness in life is about more than money or any job title.
So I want you to think right now of three reasons that make you want to get up in the morning. If you’re really motivated, write them down.
Did three things immediately come to mind? Or are you searching for them? Take a little time if you need it but make sure to have at least one concrete and tangible reason, hopefully three, but at least one, that make you want to leap up in the morning and say, “I get to do this today!” “I get to have this in my life today!” “This is one of the reasons I’m here on Earth.”,etc
If you've ever read a blog by me, you may know that I’m adopted. Because of this I’ve reflected my whole life on why am I here on this random life journey. My story is unusual which has always led me to believe that there is some real purpose and reason for why this life chose me.
For me that is one of my own ikigai. I’m endlessly curious about the unfolding. I’m fascinated by the mystery. I want to share my story, and I also want to help other people discover their own ikigai ~ and to help young people develop theirs too, from the earliest of ages.
So I have some questions for you to think about to start focusing on your own personal ikigai.
Because without it, really, what is this life?
For now this is the only life we know of. This is not a dress rehearsal. And the truth is that no matter how far you currently feel from living your own ikigai, you CAN change that. You really can. The Universe wants you to Do You, it wants us all to flourish.
The very design of everything in the cosmos let alone everything that makes up each aspect of each of us should show you what a literal miracle all of us being here is!
~Am I happy doing what I am currently doing?
~Who am I inspired by? Why?
~If money were not an issue, what would I choose to do?
~What do I hope to have accomplished in the next year? What am I doing about it now?
~What do I believe in most?
~If today was the last the day of my life, what would I do with it?
~What do I want most out of life?
~What am I truly passionate about?
~What makes me smile just by thinking about it?
~What are my skills and character traits that most align with the work I would love to do?
I encourage you to start tapping into your own ikigai. And to start taking small steps now to bring more of it into your life. Get clear about at least one thing that brings you joy and get in the habit of thinking about it first thing in the morning. If you want reinforcement, write it down and put it somewhere you will look at it often. Create your own affirmations to say daily to yourself. Nurture the parts of yourself that craves it. Honor the parts of you that will bloom with it in your life. If your heart calls for it, that is because it is meant for you.
Know that it’s already yours, that is why it moves you as it does.
Start living your ikigai.
P.S. And remember to make your bed!
